Kefir Recipes: Kefir Recipes for Health

Kefir is probably the best probiotic food in the world – and as such, it is incredibly good for you. The health benefits of kefir can be expanded upon though, and kefir recipes that include other health foods are a great way of making your diet healthier when you don’t have a lot of time on your hands.

The following ingredients can be added to kefir while it is fermenting, to add an extra dimension to the health benefits it gives:


Juices contain sugars that will help the kefir grains to ferment, as well as vitamins tat will add a health benefit to the drink when it is finished. Pineapple juice has anti-inflammatory properties and orange juice is great for boosting the immune system. Try different juices and see what works.

Also, the similar composition of grape juice and plain sugary water means that water kefir can easily be fermented and grown in grape juice! The kefir will take on the colour of the grape juice, but will ferment and grow normally.

Citrus Fruits

Citrus fruits (lemons, limes, oranges) add a recognisable flavour and a refreshing twang to the mixture. They are massively high in vitamin C, which strengthens the immune system against colds and minor illnesses.

Coconut Water

Coconut water contains essentially salts that the human body needs, as well as some great vitamins. Coconut water can either be added to the mix, or simply used instead of plain sugary water to make coconut kefir!

Salts and sugars

A small (not more than half a teaspoon for every two pints!) amount of salt can be added, with a little extra sugar, to help supply the body with the salts it needs to stay healthy. This is great if the person drinking the kefir is recovering from vomiting or diarrhoea.

Vitamin Supplements

Soluble vitamins can be dissolved in the mixture, so that the finished kefir can also be used as a vitamin drink! Be careful if you want to share the finished drink with kids though, since
